| The term 'mass media' is known to everyone. Daily we consult mass media sources to learn the latest home and world news, find necessary information, to entertain or to listen to the weather. The importance of the media these days is vast. The media play a significant role in forming and reflecting public opinion, connecting people and the world. Mass media have a strong social and cultural impact on society, because it can reach a wider audience. They comprise four major sources: TV, press, radio and the Internet. Each has its own characteristics and functions.
Everyday millions of newspapers and glossy magazines are published all over the world. The number of them seems endless. There are different international and local newspapers, dailies and weeklies, quality papers that cater to the better educated readers and popular newspapers that sell to a larger readership. Some newspapers give coverage to politics, finance and commerce; whereas others focus on 'human interest stories'.
Since the advent of radio, many more people have got access to the latest news. Radio is preferable when you are at work and require information or have to concentrate your attention on something else. Hence, we commonly switch on the radio when driving a car to listen to the newsflash and news breaks broadcast from the spot. Listeners are especially much into phone-in talk-shows and music charts.
It has been estimated that the vast majority of people regard television as their principal source of news. Our daily life is frequently planned according to the programme schedule. We switch it on to view our favourite sitcoms and talk-shows, to watch newly released movies, music videos and news programmes.
Whereas TV broadcasts are scheduled, the Web allows us to have access to information and amusement 24/7. Being both the video and audio source of information, the Web contains vast databases of information in every language. It is well-known for the variety of viewpoints presented, large collections of soundtracks and films, electronic encyclopaedias designed to facilitate the search on the Web, e-books and official websites of magazines and papers.
Life without the media would be dull and limited. However, 'addiction' to some sources of entertainment, such as watching TV and searching on the Internet for hours, can have a bad impact on health and interpersonal interaction. |
